deep in the heart of texas.

per my utter fascination with the new york times home section, i was awed to find this home..." 2,750-square-foot house for $140,000, with steel cladding, a courtyard, two studios and plenty of play space for Lucas, 3, left." photo credit: Urs Peter Flueckiger

the red metal is spectacular + certainly looks great among a west texas milieus. probably nice in a rain storm to hear the pitter-patter (they also have 15 skylights, of course, supposing it rains in texas).

henry darger's "outside artist"

while reading an interview on marcel dzama, i stumbled across the works of chicago artist Henry Darger (whom dzama explains didn't really influence his own sketches/paintings, yet the work is strikingly in parallel). darger's pictures work with biblical imagery and look at illustrations from a child as seen through his myriad of colors.

Bodo Sperlein.

Bodo Sperlein "is a London based design consultancy and manufacturer with an international client base. Bodo's designs are subtle and clean, capturing the essence of the modern with the substance and beauty of the classic. Abstract shapes and textured surfaces create highly decorative effects, whilst the object remains multi-functional."

i love this lighting as well as the plates and graphic work (this season is: black + red berries). although i'm a fan of last season's black forest bone china sold at the chiago store lille + the website uncrate.

notes on glass.

the glass cluster a cool, steel-frame chandelier that doubles as a storage rack. It's from the Stockholm design firm Form Nasielsky + is available @ generate light. the smaller design holds 16 glasses + is lit by a candle. it's like designing your own lamp.

iron chef morimoto + tadao ando.

after visiting the Pulitzer in Saint Lou, it pleased me to read about Tadao Ando's first project in NYC for Chef Morimoto's new restaurant, Morimoto talk about a pleasant, welcoming assault on the senses---food (SUSHI!) + design.

from the The New York Times home section:
"The celebrated Japanese architect Tadao Ando has completed his first project in New York: Morimoto restaurant at 88 10th Avenue (16th Street). Named after its chef, Masaharu Morimoto (a k a the Iron Chef), the $12 million restaurant features ceilings draped in undulating fiberglass-reinforced canvas, evoking the raked gravel of Zen rock gardens; furniture by Ross Lovegrove; a traditional noren curtain and Mr. Ando's signature use of concrete. The lighting, including a wall of L.E.D.-illuminated water bottles, inset, is by Arnold Chan. "Mr. Ando wanted something serene," said Stephanie Goto of Goto Design Group in New York, which collaborated on the project, "a Japanese sensibility without being overtly Japanese." ARIC CHEN (NYT)

canoe.

sean @ canoe just sent me a few greatest hits hot off the inventory press at his amazing portland shoppe + a bonus description. it's hard to go wrong with high quality + reasonable prices. canoe is located @ 1136 SW Alder St. Portland OR

"Designed in 1973 by Jean Pierre. The plastic cursor frames and defines the days of the month, transforming what appears to be a merely pleasing 70's style graphic into a daily date keeper. Powder coated steel construction with silk screened numerals" $115.00

"This 6 bottle wine rack was a result of a industrial design students (William Rhodes - Australia) class project. The extruded aluminum is really nice and you can purchase additional modules that slide on to increase the height and storage of the wine rack." $49.00 Additional Modules $8.00

"Stainless Steel and Teak trivet is a great gift. The "feet" of the trivet can be extended for those extra large platters or pots. This comes directly from Denmark - so the quality speaks for itself" $20.00

frank gehry + chicago.

after a great reunion weekend in chicago, on sunday, nick + i stopped by the awe-inspiring Frank Gehry designed millennium Park. We also strolled michigan avenue and snuck in some deep dish pizza (even though I was gunning for Sushi Samba).

excerpt taken from the millennium Park website: Frank Gehry, winner of the National Medal of Art, applied his signature style to this revolutionary outdoor concert venue. The Pavilion stands 120-feet high, with a billowing headdress of brushed stainless steel ribbons that frame the stage opening and connect to an overhead trellis of crisscross steel pipes. The trellis supports the sound system, which spans the 4,000 fixed seats and the Great Lawn, which accommodates an additional 7,000 people.
