:1950's Chair designing for the Knoll Group, international early sculptures including; Solar color-reflective, balancing kinetic, and block-panel screens. check his studio page here. info from knoll website: italian sculptor, university lecturer and furniture designer Harry Bertoia displayed a unique stroke of genius with his patented Diamond Chair for Knoll International in 1952. Bertoia was an inventor of form and an enricher of furniture design with his introduction of a new material: he turned industrial wire rods into a design icon. Educated at Detroit Technical High School, the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts and Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Bertoia taught metal crafts at Cranbrook. He worked with Charles Eames to develop his signature molded plywood chairs. Eero Saarinen commissioned him to design a metal sculptured screen for the General Motors Technical Center in Detroit. His awards include the craftsmanship medal from the American Institute of Architects, as well as AIA’s Gold Medal.

dylan is god.
after being under-educated about bob dylan, both my perception + respect grew tri-fold after watching the PBS/American Masters program on Bob Dylan (see website here). Directed by Martin Scorsese with never before seen footage and rare interviews. well worth the two + hours.
kontroll + head-on.

down the alley.
amy cutler + fairy tale women
I love amy cutler's high-detailed, fairy-taleish women dressed in Victorian garb. she draws on eerie effects, chaos and dream-like imagery to create a world of the unknown. reminds me of salem witch hunts and days when sketchy ladies ruled the earth.
friday props

across enemy lines.
Lamar Hunt: "I’d be less than honest if I didn’t say I considered that to be (two) of our bigger games all year. The rivalry grew out of mutual respect and mutual dislike.”
Well, with the shocking display of defense (it was like a dream last sunday), Kansas City plays our dreaded rivals, The Raiders, this Sunday evening at 8:30 pm (est). willie roaf is questionable but the return of patrick surtain is looking up. next week...i'll start to post the spread.

breakin' my heart...
my fave time of year (& jimmy fowlers) has landed at this small nolita party invasion. See the San Gennaro festival ...beginning tonight. This clown (above) is known for being the lamest, meanest clown around (isn't he wearing Urban Outfitters?)...you will laugh your head off, especially should you hit the festival early during the weekdays (circa 4PM) when the Staten Island Italians are at their finest. Calvin Trillin (of Kansas City rearing) and his fun food read Tummy Trilogy begs you (yes, begs) not to forget about the sausage and zeppole. Read a nice interview here or just buy the paperback. Well worth the dolla.

jumping ON the bandwagon.
I was on the well-traveled design*sponge blogsite and could not agree more with the posting of these "ridiculously cool" photographs from the french duo of pierre javelle and akiko ida. check the website here. I recently emailed them for a price listing and anxiously await as they figure things out. stuff this brilliant is hard to come by. colors, textures, food and figurines come to life.
entirely genius.

old classics.
the red balloons is the french classic from the 1956 short film, Le Balloon Rouge by Albert Lamorisse. And so the story goes...a red balloon befriends the a boy named Pascal. After the balloon is stoned by a local gang of bullies, other balloons in Paris collect together and take Pascal on a flight over the city. An American West Side Story-ish tale.
cool stuff.
If you need a cool, unique gift webite... look no further . Expect to find reasonable, design-ware, reliable goodies like the admit one popcorn bowl (pictured above). as well as...
t-shirts.
egg shell planters.
tiger journals.

and the home of the...CHIEFS!
This is where I'll be parked on Sunday at noon (Arthur Bryant's tailgate not included) at the loudest stadium in the league, amoung a sea of red...a place called Arrowhead which houses a team called The Kansas City Chiefs . note to mike: not getting cocky yet...
finally, the National Football League season is upon us.
dream imagery.
my friday obsession with hitchockian imagery continues as illustrated through these dream stills from vertigo--i.e., the stark brownish-red, swirls, cubanist inspired hallucinations and surreal visual effects. some may find it outdated but i think it's an effective and equally paranoid cinematic device.
